From the moment we wake up &#8211; from a slumber that was monitored by a sleep tracking app &#8211;\u00a0 to scheduling how we work, eat, rest and play, good design sets the pace of our days. Our favourite designers create essential everyday products and we rarely know their names.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, International Design Day (April 27) gives us a chance to fix that. Created by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theicod.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Council of Design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this day allows us to celebrate the positive social impacts that good design has on our everyday lives. The global network asks designers to reflect on the \u201cwell-being of people within their local environments\u201d and to use innovative design to honour diversity and transcend borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s theme is Suspended in Transition: \u201cThe old ways are no longer fit for purpose but the new ways have yet to be created. We find ourselves in this in-between, \u2018liminal\u2019 space. It feels urgent to act\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<section id=\"promotion\" class=\"promotion-content-raw inlinepromo inlinepromo_professional-diploma-in-ux-designp-1 my-4\" style=\"\">\n\t<div class=\"w-container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"row align-items-center\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12 promotion-info\">\n                <a class=\"link-content\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/courses\/ux-design?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog_panel_pdux&amp;utm_campaign=blog_promo\" style=\"\">\n                    <p>[GET CERTIFIED IN UX]<\/p>\n                    <span>Take our Professional Diploma in UX Design course<\/span>\n                <\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the peaks of Covid-19 and the lows of lockdown, good design and technology helped improve our lines of communication, strengthen communities when we couldn\u2019t be in the same room and ease the spread of misinformation. Now, as we watch a humanitarian crisis unfold in Ukraine, we are extending the new skills we learnt in 2020 to reach out, listen to and help people thousands of miles away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design matters. Whether it\u2019s a small, everyday action like buying a book online or stepping up and engaging in social activism on a local or global scale, designers actively aim to improve the lives of others. So for International Design Day at UXDI, we name our favourite designers and acknowledge the positive changes that they bring into the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6455 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/idoc.jpeg\" alt=\"international design day\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/idoc.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/idoc-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Dejan, UX Designer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Gebbia, Co-founder and Head of Airbnb DesignStudio, Katie Dill, former director of Experience @ Airbnb, and Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"http:\/\/airbnb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbnb.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the company&#8217;s non-profit foundation, has so far committed to house 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine. Also, a small thing that I find cool and valuable is that Katie and Joe popularised storyboarding in the UX process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jony Ive, former Chief Design Officer, Apple.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all his industrial design work and also for leading Human Interface Design, Apple&#8217;s UX department.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><br \/>\nConor, Head of Product<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jon Kolko, founder of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ac4d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Centre of Design<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formerly of Frog Design <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A brilliant communicator on the discipline of design and design education. Always generous in sharing his knowledge and insights with the design community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bas Beeren and Nalden of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/wetransfer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeTransfer<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For proving that you can craft a beautiful, uplifting user experience from something as simple and utilitarian as a file transfer app.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Ken, Sales Executive<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favourite UX Designer is a Croatian chap, Dejan Karin. Incredible!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Orla, Head of Course Production<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/candiwilliamswriter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candi Williams<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Head of Content Design, Bumble <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had the opportunity to meet Candi as part of the work on our upcoming Content Design course and I was instantly impressed. Not only is she a fantastic content designer, she\u2019s also an incredible advocate for diversity, accessibility and inclusion in user experience design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ivanhzhao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivan Zhao<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the design team at Notion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a fairly typical Type A personality, being able to organise my thoughts is key\u2026 Notion is where I do that. I love how customisable it is and how easy it is to incorporate visual content alongside text. It\u2019s just a well designed, really usable tool that does exactly what it sets out to do and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/ux-documentation-tools\/\">I use it on a daily basis<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9527 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screenshot-2022-04-04-at-15.38.32-1-1.png\" alt=\"Notion \" width=\"2652\" height=\"1230\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<b>Kate, Graphic Designer<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annieatkins.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Annie Atkins<\/i><\/a><i>, Graphic Designer for Film<\/i><br \/>\nShe creates and adds to the world of the film, giving background elements and key props personality and a sense of place. Her work for The Grand Budapest Hotel, among others, speaks for itself. It\u2019s really interesting how she creates pieces for a time before designers or a completely imagined universe, but that they still feel and look authentic. It\u2019s so great how open she is with sharing her process and insights with aspiring designers too.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Louise, Senior Content Writer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffking.co.uk\/shazam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff King<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, former Product Designer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shazam.com\/gb\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shazam<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in the day, if I heard a song I liked but didn\u2019t know the artist, I would try to remember the lyrics until I got home. There I would use the one and only computer in the household, log onto our terrible dial-up internet and frantically search lyrics shared on community message boards. Now, all I have to do is open up Shazam on time to catch the song and boom! I know everything I need to know about the song and artist. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rin Park, Product Designer from <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.costarastrology.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-Star<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most people during lockdown, I resorted to astrology to give a certain cosmic flair to my mental breakdown. While some of the advice was genuinely very helpful, the sassiness of the daily readings would remind me that \u201cno, Mercury is not in retrograde, I\u2019m just a disaster\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Eoin, Digital Marketing Executive<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Persson, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.repcountapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repcount<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just really easy to use and intuitive. It solves a problem for me by tracking so I don\u2019t have to do it myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Jash, Marketing Strategist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matiasduarte?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mat\u00edas Duarte<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Vice President of\u00a0 Material Design, Google<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duarte had a big impact in the design updates for Android which helped in the flight for the supreme OS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Janet, Head of People Operations<br \/>\n<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yael Levey, Product Designer for Meta, formerly the Creative Director with BBC Weather <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s big into the professional development and growth of design people and design teams. She has her own website (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamnotmypixels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am not my Pixels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and has a bank of content there around helping others get into UX, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/8-ux-portfolio-best-practices\/\">UX processes and practices<\/a>, creative confidence and building yourself up.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.denveruxer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Doug Collins<\/i><\/a><i>, Author of The UX Design Field Book<br \/>\n<\/i>He runs daily talks on Twitter (#uxtalk) and I like his interactions with the community more than anything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Medb, Graphic Designer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lobsterstudio.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lobster Studio<\/span><\/i><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favourite designer at the moment is actually the team of designers behind the Bulgarian-based creative studio, Lobster Studio. I came across them after they won a 2021 Motion Award for their educational video created for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/motionawards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ted-Ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>I recommend checking out their website. Their clean and colourful animations are a joy to watch. Even their logo animation makes me so happy!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9529 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screenshot-2022-04-04-at-15.40.15-1-1.png\" alt=\"Lobster Studio\" width=\"1868\" height=\"1046\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Fin, Sales Executive<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/persons-of-interest\/hidetaka-miyazaki-sees-death-as-a-feature-not-a-bug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidetaka Miyazaki<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative Director and President of FromSoftware\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most famous Game Designers of all time, he\u00a0 was a key guy behind all of the Dark Souls games. His most recent release is Elden Ring, which George R.R Martin co-wrote, and people are earmarking it as one of the greatest games ever created. He\u2019s a beast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Eoghan, Student Success Executive\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dieter Rams, former industrial designer with Braun<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i>His approach is \u201cLess, but better\u201d. His 10 principles of good design written in the 1980s still rings through today and can be applied to digital design as well as industrial design. He heavily influenced Jony Ive\u2019s style in the early days. Rams says that Apple is one of only a handful of companies existing today that design products according to his ten principles of good design.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideo.com\/people\/david-kelley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>David Kelly<\/i><\/a><i>, founder of IDEO<br \/>\n<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Californian company designed everything from tooth brushes to computers and was one of the first companies to use design thinking principles and human-centred design principles to create really innovative products. Hiring people from all kinds of backgrounds, engineers, architects, industrial designers, psychologists, teachers etc, IDEO made physical products and moved into the digital space by applying the same design principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Cathal, Student Success Executive<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stinkstudios.com\/work?tags=digital-experiences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stink Studios<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They work with companies like Spotify and Google to create really entertaining, smart and purposeful content. Their team is made up of observers and scientists so they always approach projects in a very unique way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Aoife, Head of Student Success Team<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/siona-tebbutt-1076b057\/?originalSubdomain=uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siona Tebbutt<\/a>, Lead Designer Engineer, Dyson<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em>In terms of product design, the Dyson Airwrap and Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is amazing. Using aerodynamics to curl hair is genius. There are so many little elements I love about both products but they have the motor in the handle, unlike any other hair dryer, so the hair dryer isn\u2019t top heavy. No more painful wrists.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mubarak.design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mubarak Marafa<\/a>, Product Designer, Goodnotes<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m using it on my iPad at the moment and I thought I\u2019d hate not using paper, but they\u2019ve done a brilliant job.
