Of course, if you\u2019re looking to volunteer remotely, there\u2019s no need to keep your search local.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send an email introducing yourself and your reason for reaching out. For example: \u201cI\u2019ve just completed a UX design course and would love to volunteer my skills. I can help with\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if your speculative applications don\u2019t lead to any volunteering work right away, it\u2019s a great way to make a connection. Work on something you\u2019re passionate about<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteering means you can use your skills to contribute to something you\u2019re really passionate about. Your project could focus on anything from saving the bees to helping the elderly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever area you choose, your time will be valued. Design skills could normally be unaffordable for some volunteer groups. It also feels good to try to solve a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/design-for-good-with-sarah-fathallah\/\">social problem<\/a> and make a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/what-hiring-managers-look-for-in-ux-designer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiring manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> James believes that volunteering signals to employers that you have positive outcomes in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Add an interesting project to your portfolio<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not selfish to think \u201cwhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d when it comes to volunteer work either. Volunteering can advance your career by adding interesting projects to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/what-is-a-ux-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX portfolio<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and help you stand out in the hiring process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX expert Krys believes in doing one project for free starting out:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;I\u2019m a big believer in getting paid for your work, but it\u2019s ok to do one project for free when you\u2019re building your portfolio. Choose a charity that deserves and needs your help.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James recommends doing volunteering over unpaid internships: \u201cI\u2019m not in favour of unpaid internships. In my opinion they are predatory on the labour of people who don\u2019t have a lot of power, organisationally. They are also discriminatory against people who can\u2019t afford to live in a city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/expectations-junior-ux-designer\/\">Junior designer<\/a> Vesna chose to do voluntary groups for the same reason, saying \u201cI know designers who\u2019ve complained about their unpaid internships with corporations. They see that they\u2019re doing the same work as other paid designers. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;Everyone has a different UX journey. Think about what\u2019s the best option for your career path.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Gain real-world experience<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing UX outside of the learning environment for the first time brings new and exciting challenges. A voluntary project shows that you know how to deal with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/ux-design-process\/\">UX process<\/a> isn\u2019t always smooth. Krys explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;The real world is very different from your classes. You are taught in school that UX works a certain way, but when you get into the trenches, it\u2019s different. Having that experience on your resume is incredibly valuable and it will help you as a practitioner.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After studying UX, Vesna wanted to get more real-life collaboration skills. She explained \u201cyou won\u2019t learn that from a book, but you need to do it to be able to talk about it in interviews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vesna advises to \u201cjust see if you can get that collaboration experience. Even better if it\u2019s something that\u2019s going to be handed over to development. If you can\u2019t find that, work together with some people to experience what it\u2019s like to work on a team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteering helped Vesna to confidently talk about growing her UX skills in interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Develop in-demand UX skills<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteering gives you an opportunity to develop important soft and hard UX skills. Vesna increased her UX knowledge by designing a health app with a group of developers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;I tried to follow the full UX process. I did interviews, competitive benchmarking, created personas, sketches, wireframes and prototypes. The greatest thing was that my team actually listened! It was actually a great first real-life UX experience.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to closely follow the UX process in volunteer projects. Skipping steps can lead to less than ideal outcomes. Don\u2019t feel pressured into doing any \u201cquick UX\u201d by your group. Tell them that you need to follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/courses\/ux-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteering shows hiring managers like James that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;you got up to speed with the sector, increased your knowledge, made changes to your processes, and collaborated with subject matter experts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. I\u2019d already set up the portfolio from the UX Design Institute and showed them that. Getting a volunteer position isn\u2019t that hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2.<\/b><b> What expectations should I set before starting a project?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s wise to be honest about your availability before agreeing to a project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has different schedules on voluntary projects. You might be free to dedicate 40 hours per week or 3 hours on weekends. Be open about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your team could also be spread all over the world, so projects can move at a slower pace. You need to be patient with your group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirm how many hours per week you can work and discuss what you can deliver in the timeframe. James believes that this will help keep the commitment manageable. \u201cIt\u2019s also a great portfolio case study to show that you understand how to scope the UX process,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3.<\/b><b> I don\u2019t have the time to volunteer. What else can I do?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone is in the position to volunteer free time. There are other things you can do to build your portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have transferable skills from previous roles or university studies? Do you have any experience building software? Sell these skills and experiences in your portfolio too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James encourages job hunters to <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #aa006d;\">&#8220;always remember that your portfolio is a sales brochure \u2013 make it work hard for you. The UX industry is full of people with unique and interesting pasts who apply that to their daily practice.
