UX design helps create the products that make these things possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX design is important because it ultimately determines how users (i.e. customers) feel about a brand and whether or not they return. As such, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/the-value-of-ux-design\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value of UX is huge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the most successful companies prioritise it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-designed product should be simple to use. It should evoke positive feelings like confidence, trust and enjoyment in the user. A poorly designed product, on the other hand, can make a user feel confused or distrustful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take shortcuts in the UX design process, it will affect the overall product quality. They follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/ux-process\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX design process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to understand the needs, goals and pain points of their target audience and to design and test potential solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX designers are experts in putting the user first and advocating for them throughout the design process. They also understand the business strategy, making sure that the solutions they design will bring value to the company or client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to be aware that UX designers do not focus on how products look. They are concerned with how the user moves through and interacts with a product, ensuring a logical layout, structure and navigation system, as well as functions and features that help to solve the user problem. The visual design comes last and is the responsibility of the UI designer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll learn more about what a UX designer is and what they do as we explore their day-to-day tasks, the tools they use, where they typically work and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"What-does-a-UX-designer-do?\">What does a UX designer do?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day-to-day tasks of a UX designer are determined by the UX process. The UX process broadly consists of research, design, and testing and validation. Based on that, the typical tasks and responsibilities of a UX designer include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Conducting user research<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foundation of good UX design is research, and that\u2019s true now more than ever. With AI simplifying other parts of the design process, such as wireframing and prototyping, research remains a critical area of human intervention and insight because it involves one thing AI can\u2019t replicate: empathy. Because of this, research has been called out as one of the most in-demand skills for UX designers on platforms like LinkedIn and it was one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/the-top-ux-design-trends-in-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX Design Institute\u2019s top trends of 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of any new project, a UX designer will conduct quantitative or qualitative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/what-is-user-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">user research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or analyse existing research) to understand what the target user needs and wants from a particular product or feature. This involves different projects like creating flow diagrams, prototypes and wireframing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX designers create flow diagrams to give a bird\u2019s eye view of how different elements of the product interconnect. They map out how users reach their goal and how they move through a website or app. They are made using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/ux-tools-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Figma and Adobe XD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prototypes validate UX design decisions, helping companies avoid making expensive mistakes. Once these prototypes are finalised, UX designers will make wireframes to hand over the designs to developers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>User testing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design validation doesn\u2019t stop once the wireframes are handed to developers. The simple answer is this: while a UX designer is concerned with the careful planning and design of the user experience of a product, a UI designer is concerned with the look and feel of the digital interface. In other words, UX designers are concerned with the overall experience and are more concerned with problem-solving, while UI designers are concerned with making sure the product has stunning visuals.<\/p>\n<p>That said, both UX and UI designers have the same goal: to deliver fantastic final products that function well and meet the end users\u2019 needs. They work hand-in-hand to do this. While the UX designer figures out what users want and how to give it to them through research and analysis, UI designers make sure the whole thing looks beautiful and is a joy to behold.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Where-do-UX-designers-work?\">Where do UX designers work?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX design applies to any product or service that\u2019s used by people, so UX designers work in all different types of companies, across a variety of industries. UX designers can work in-house for one company, at an agency or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/guide-freelance-ux-designer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freelance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New UX designers should consider where they would ideally like to work and if they want to be permanent or freelance. Here\u2019s what can be expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>contractor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>freelance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> UX designer can expect to be contracted out to different companies to work on specific projects for short periods of time. Many UX designers love the flexibility of the contractor lifestyle, plus they can work on different kinds of projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A UX <\/span><b>consultant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally self-employed. They lend their areas of expertise to advise different companies for fixed periods of time. UX consultants often help businesses achieve their business goals with UX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For UX consultant, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/student-stories-digital-marketing-to-ux-consultant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this involves \u201chelping clients understand where they are and where they fit within a market\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A UX designer in an <\/span><b>agency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely be exposed to many different projects. They don\u2019t tend to stray outside the remit of their job description, and can work alongside UX researchers, UI designers and UX writers. These defined roles allow large companies to operate more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><b>startup<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>smaller company<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a UX designer could expect to take on all of the roles within the UX design umbrella if they\u2019re the only designer. So my main focus is user research but I also look at the full UX design.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of confusion surrounding UX job titles in different companies. Many companies have product designers, service designers and experience designers with obvious UX design responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\/in\/jfjtran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jade Grainger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Career Services Advisor, UX Design Institute) addresses this confusion: \u201cdon\u2019t worry, companies always alter job titles. It comes down to a company\u2019s focus and needs. Sometimes these UX professionals work across different teams from marketing to customer support to product\u201d. She says to keep an eye on what software is listed in the job description too, \u201cthis can give you a huge understanding of what the role entails. If they don\u2019t come your way, grab opportunities where you can learn. It\u2019s worth noting that there are more opportunities to advance and specialise in companies with mature UX teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialist areas like user research or UX writing have become more commonplace in larger UX teams.
