Discussing the survey\u2019s findings, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voguebusiness.com\/fashion\/debunking-the-dream-is-working-in-fashion-going-out-of-style-success-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bella Webb and Maliha Shoaib<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> write:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe survey revealed a workforce struggling to reconcile its expectations of working in fashion with the reality: late nights, long hours, limited pay and opportunities, an overemphasis on fickle personal relationships, and a burnout culture spurred by constant travel and overproduction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many, a career in fashion design isn\u2019t all it\u2019s cracked up to be. Here are some of the main challenges that fashion designers face\u2014and the key factors that are driving widespread discontentment within the field. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A high-stress environment without a healthy work-life balance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever watched <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Runway<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll know that the fashion design industry is notorious for its high-pressure environment, driven by tight deadlines, ever-changing demands, and impeccably high standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While movies and TV shows may not be entirely accurate in their portrayal, it\u2019s not uncommon for fashion designers to regularly work long hours in a high-stress environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, fashion design jobs typically require on-site presence. As such, there\u2019s limited flexibility within the field\u2014making it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring back to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voguebusiness.com\/fashion\/debunking-the-dream-is-fashions-lifestyle-sustainable-for-employees-success-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vogue Business\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of over 600 fashion industry professionals, 48% of respondents say they work more than their contracted hours, while over 50% of respondents must travel for work at least once every few months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overtime, frequent travel, stress, and burnout are seemingly par for the course\u2014leading many fashion designers to rethink their careers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Low pay and economic instability<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the high pressures of the job, fashion designer salaries rarely reflect the amount of hard work and creativity required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entry-level roles in particular tend to be low-paid, but even established fashion designers may struggle with financial instability\u2014especially if they\u2019re freelancing or working for smaller brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ie.indeed.com\/career\/fashion-designer\/salaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports an average salary of around \u20ac30,000 per year for fashion designers in Ireland (compared to the national average salary of \u20ac45,000 &#8211; \u20ac50,000 across all occupations).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while this average may not be reflective of all fashion designer salaries, it does highlight the point that fashion design isn\u2019t necessarily the most lucrative or financially stable career path.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ethical, moral, and environmental concerns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fashion industry faces increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact and (un)ethical practices. Issues such as pollution, waste, exploitation of labour, and unsustainable production processes are a major concern for many fashion designers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity, equity, and inclusion is another huge issue. In 2023, celebrity stylist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2023\/mar\/24\/why-stylist-to-the-stars-law-roach-quit-zendaya-ariana-grande#:~:text=In%20an%20interview%20with%20the,t%20do%20that%20without%20suffering.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Law Roach announced his retirement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, citing the fashion industry\u2019s overt nepotism, and \u201cpolitics and false narratives\u201d as driving factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fashion industry has many deep-seated, systemic issues that are increasingly coming to light\u2014causing widespread disillusionment and dissatisfaction among fashion designers and other industry professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Concerns about purpose and problem-solving\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While creatively fulfilling for many, fashion design can leave you feeling like your work lacks meaningful impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The industry\u2019s focus on aesthetics, trends, and consumerism can feel shallow\u2014especially for those who want to use their skills to solve real-world problems or drive positive change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to undermine the importance of fashion design in empowering creative expression, shaping personal and cultural identities, and challenging societal norms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, given the challenges we\u2019ve explored so far, many designers feel like they simply don\u2019t have the opportunity to achieve this in their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why consider a career in UX?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For fashion designers looking to switch careers and apply their skills elsewhere, UX design stands out as a highly appealing alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How so? Here\u2019s what you can expect from a career in UX.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Growing demand and a positive future outlook<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future of Jobs<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report, the World Economic Forum cites UX and design skills among the top 10 skills to be prioritised by businesses globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX hiring managers are seeing this reflected within their organisations. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/your-guide-to-landing-ux-jobs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey of over 500 UX professionals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 68% of those responsible for hiring said they expect demand for UX skills to increase at their company in the next 1-2 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/computer-and-information-technology\/web-developers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> projects that overall employment of web developers and digital designers (that includes UX designers) will grow 8% from 2023 to 2033\u2014faster than the average for all occupations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UX\/UI designer is ranked 6th on Indeed\u2019s list of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ie.indeed.com\/career-advice\/finding-a-job\/in-demand-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 most in-demand jobs for 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while product designer jobs (which incorporate both UX and UI) are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/product-designer-jobs\/trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expected to increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a rate of 3% between 2018 and 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, there continues to be a steady demand for UX skills.
