But now there\u2019s a new conversational AI tool on the scene: Google\u2019s very own Gemini AI (formerly known as Bard AI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re intent on keeping up with the latest AI tools (smart move, by the way), you\u2019ll want to get to grips with Gemini.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s it all about? And how is it useful for UX designers?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We explain everything you need to know about Bard AI\/Gemini so far\u2014and share some examples of how you can use it for better UX.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2><strong>What is Bard AI\/Gemini?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini\u2014formerly known as Bard\u2014 is a conversational chatbot developed and owned by Google. Launched in March 2023, it\u2019s now widely available in more than 40 languages across over 230 countries and territories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bard AI (aka Gemini) can understand and respond to questions, generate text and image content, write code, translate different languages, find patterns and trends within data, and generate data visualisations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most exciting, perhaps, is that Bard\/Gemini can access the internet. This means you can use it just like you\u2019d use Google to search the web\u2014but in a more conversational manner, and with more bespoke results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/ai\/bard-google-ai-search-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">words of Sundar Pichai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CEO of Google and Alphabet:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBard seeks to combine the breadth of the world\u2019s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity and a launchpad for curiosity\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How does Bard AI\/Gemini work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bard AI or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/ai\/google-gemini-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini AI<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google\u2019s most advanced large language model to date. It uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to simulate human conversations. This enables it to understand user questions and respond in a way that\u2019s both appropriate and useful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not familiar with AI terminology, here\u2019s a quick recap on what those terms mean:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural language processing (NLP) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers to read, interpret, and generate human language. This is how tools like Bard\/Gemini understand what we\u2019re saying or writing and respond appropriately.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Machine learning (ML) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the method used to train computers to understand different types of information and perform certain tasks. You feed the system examples so that, over time, it figures out how to interpret and respond in different contexts\u2014without being explicitly programmed for every single use case.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Language learning models (LLM) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help computers get better at performing language-related tasks (such as responding to a user\u2019s question). In machine learning, the language learning model is like a student who improves their language skills over time by studying lots of different examples and practising speaking and writing the new language<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a very brief look at the technology behind Bard AI\/Gemini. What makes Gemini especially useful is that it can access the internet. So: you\u2019ve got the power of search and artificial intelligence all in one tool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of what Bard AI\/Gemini can actually do, here are some of the tool\u2019s most interesting functions and features so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Voice input: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can interact with Gemini hands-free by asking questions or providing prompts verbally. If requested, it can provide an audio response, too.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Image-based prompts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to text and voice-based questions and prompts, you can also provide prompts in the form of images.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Image generation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter prompts to explain your creative vision and Gemini will generate images accordingly (which you can then download).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Seamless connection with Google search: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not satisfied with Gemini&#8217;s answer, you can click \u201cGoogle it\u201d to launch a web search instead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Double-check: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verify the accuracy and reliability of Gemini&#8217;s responses by asking the tool to double-check it. With this feature, it will check whether there\u2019s content on the internet to substantiate the answer provided, using a colour-coded system to highlight possible areas of doubt.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Write, debug, and export code in numerous programming languages <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including Python, C++, Javascript, Ruby, SQL, and Swift.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Data analysis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bard AI\/ Gemini can help you identify patterns, trends, and correlations within a dataset, and to interpret findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Integration with Google apps and services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini can retrieve and work with real-time information from Maps, YouTube, Hotels, and Flights\u2014enabling you to pull what you need from multiple sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Integration with Gmail, Docs, and Drive: <\/b>If you use Google Workspace, you can enable Gemini to interact with content from your Gmail account, Google Docs, and Google Drive. This is useful for locating and summarising information across your personal content.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini is constantly being updated with new features and functionality. It\u2019s also quite interesting to see how the tool has evolved over time!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How can UX designers use Bard AI\/Gemini?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve covered Bard AI\/Gemini in general terms. So what about its role in UX design? How can UX designers use Bard to enhance and streamline their work?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini is a powerful UX assistant whose strengths lie in rapidly gathering, providing, and interpreting different types of information\u2014as well as generating new content. Alternatively, you can copy-paste research data into the chat directly (if you don\u2019t want to connect Gemini to your Google Workspace).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini can help you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify trends in both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/blog\/quantitative-vs-qualitative-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualitative and quantitative data<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speed up the process of conducting sentiment analysis (which is notoriously time-consuming)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create data visualisations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generate action points<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>BUT: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When giving Bard AI \/ Gemini access to research data, be mindful of privacy and data protection.
